How does it work?

Establishing the pose whether for face or body is our first concern. Calm music and a relaxed feeling are important to both the artist and the person being cast.

Materials are laid out for the 20 minute process. Alginate and plaster bandages have strict time constraints that have to be adhered to.

Alginate is a powder derived from seaweed. When mixed with the correct amount of water it becomes rubbery and strong. This is the same product that a dentist would use to cast an impression for your teeth. It is safe, comfortable, and hypoallergenic.

Once the precise amounts of alginate and water are mixed you have approximately 3 to 8 minutes of working time. The variables for setting time of alginate are: temperature of water, amount of water to powder, humidity in the air and even the manufacturer of the materials. The rush is on from the time the alginate hits the water. Mixing time is limited and working time on the body is limited. Experience with materials is recommended.

Plaster bandages are applied on top of the set alginate to give it a rigid shell for it's removal. Bandages have been prepared and cut to the correct length for application - dipped in warm water and smoothed on. Setting should be from 5 to 10 minutes

Total time should be no more than 25 minutes for full front torso. The alginate is worked around the nose area, thereby eliminating the usual straws used in the past for breathing purposes. Once the cast is taken off, hydrocal is mixed with water and poured into the negative casting. Once the plaster has set, the outer plaster bandages and alginate are taken off. The resulting positive casting is now ready for refining and drying. A finished cast can be produced in two to three weeks depending on the size and the required base or mounting appliance. Choice of colors finishes: bronze powder, color washes and many more.
